HMRC approved mileage rates — pick a vehicle, drag the miles, and see the claim total for the tax year.
Business mileage
Travel between workplaces or to a client's site — not the commute.
Claim total
— every mile at the same flat rate this tax year.
Illustrative only — not tax advice. AMAP flat-rate method — an alternative to claiming actual vehicle costs, not both. Confirm current rates on gov.uk.
HMRC's Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) scheme exists so sole traders and partners don't have to keep a running total of every fuel receipt, service bill and insurance renewal just to claim business mileage. Instead, a flat rate per mile stands in for all of it — simpler to log, and it survives an HMRC check without a shoebox of paperwork behind it.
The two-tier car and van rate
Cars and vans claim 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year, then 25p per mile after that. Motorcycles are a flat 24p per mile with no step-down, and bicycles are a flat 20p per mile. The threshold resets every 6 April — it isn't a lifetime cap, and it applies per vehicle type, not per vehicle if you switch partway through the year. What counts as "business miles" is travel between different workplaces or to a client's site, not the daily commute from home to a fixed base — that distinction is worth getting right, since HMRC does check it.
A worked example
A van driven 12,000 business miles in a tax year claims 45p on the first 10,000 (£4,500) and 25p on the remaining 2,000 (£500) — £5,000 in total. Drop to 8,000 miles and the whole claim stays at 45p, since the 10,000-mile threshold is never reached: 8,000 × 45p = £3,600. The mileage log itself doesn't need to be complicated — date, destination, purpose and miles driven is enough, kept as it happens rather than reconstructed from memory at year end.
What this isn't
This is the AMAP flat-rate method only — it's an alternative to claiming actual vehicle costs (fuel, insurance, repairs, finance) proportioned by business use, not something used alongside it; pick one method per vehicle and stick with it. It also doesn't include the 5p-per-mile passenger supplement for carrying a fellow employee on a business trip, and it assumes the vehicle isn't already owned by a limited company, where different rules apply. Confirm the current rates on gov.uk before filing — they're reviewed periodically, even though they've held steady for a long time.
