A lapsed certification doesn't just mean a fine or a failed audit — for a gas or electrical business it can mean being legally unable to work until it's sorted, and a customer finding out mid-job that the registration on the van sticker expired three weeks ago. Renewal dates rarely line up with each other, and none of them send a reminder until it's close enough to feel urgent. Why lead time matters more than the date itself

Most of these aren't same-day renewals. Gas Safe reassessment can need booking weeks ahead, especially around busy periods; NICEIC and similar competent person schemes often run an annual assessment visit that has to be scheduled; insurance renewal quotes are worth getting early enough to shop around rather than accepting whatever's offered the week cover lapses. The "renew soon" flag on this tool fires at 60 days specifically because that's roughly the window where most of these processes still have room to move without a rush fee or a gap in cover.

A worked example

A Gas Safe registration expiring in 45 days sits in "renew soon" — comfortably before the deadline, but close enough that booking the reassessment this week rather than next month is the difference between a routine renewal and a scramble. Meanwhile insurance expiring in 20 days is also flagged, and CSCS sitting at 200 days out doesn't need attention yet. Seeing all of them side by side, rather than buried in five separate reminder emails, is the actual point.

Beyond certifications

What this isn't

This doesn't renew anything, doesn't store dates between visits (they reset if the page is closed), and doesn't know the actual booking lead time for any specific scheme or insurer — those vary and are worth checking directly. Treat it as a snapshot to act on today, not a permanent record.
