A customer with a leak, a fault or a job that needs quoting doesn't know a business exists until they search for it. What comes back in those first few seconds — a claimed profile or a grey "unclaimed" listing, a review count, a site that loads or one that stalls, a phone number that matches everywhere or doesn't — decides who gets the call before a word is spoken. This audit scores that first impression from four checks anyone can run themselves in a few minutes.

How to check each one

Open an incognito or private browser window (so saved logins and history don't skew the results) and search "[trade] near [postcode]" the way a customer actually would. Note whether the Google Business Profile in the local pack is claimed — an unclaimed listing usually shows a "claim this business" prompt to the owner and offers less control over what's shown. Note the review count next to it. Then open the website from a phone on mobile data, not wifi, and time how long it takes to feel usable. Finally, check the phone number shown on Google against the number on the website, Facebook and any directory listing that comes up — they need to match exactly, including the format.

A worked example

Claimed profile (30 points), 6 reviews (17 points, in the 1-24 band), a site that loads fast on mobile (20 points), but a phone number that's out of date on one directory listing (0 points): 67 out of 100. That's a solid base with one fixable gap — updating a stray directory listing is a five-minute job compared to the mismatch it's costing.

What this isn't

This is a self-reported snapshot, not a live scan — it scores exactly what's entered here, checked by a human looking at a search result, not an automated crawl of Google or the wider web. Search results also vary by location, device and Google's own testing, so two searches minutes apart can differ slightly. Use it to catch the obvious gaps, not as a precise, repeatable ranking signal.
