Self-estimate, not tracked data. A call log or website timestamps will beat a guess. Not every trade needs out-of-hours coverage to win the job.

Trading hours are usually set around when work gets done — 8 till 5, Monday to Friday. Enquiries don't follow the same schedule. A burst pipe doesn't wait for opening time, and plenty of people only get round to ringing around for quotes in the evening, once they're home from their own job. The gap between the two is coverage that simply isn't there.

Why hours and demand rarely line up

A standard 8-till-5, five-day week covers 45 of the week's 168 hours — barely a quarter. Everything outside that, including every evening, every weekend and any lunch break spent on a job rather than answering the phone, is a stretch where a call either goes to voicemail or simply doesn't get picked up. Whether that actually costs work depends on how much genuine demand falls in those hours, which varies a lot by trade — emergency plumbing and heating skews heavily towards evenings and weekends; a lot of planned improvement work doesn't.

A worked example

45 hours open a week is 27% coverage of the full week, leaving 123 hours uncovered. If roughly 30% of monthly enquiries — call it 60 a month — land in that uncovered time, that's 18 enquiries a month arriving when nobody's answering. Even a modest share of those going to a competitor who does pick up is a real, recurring cost, and it compounds — a caller who gets no answer once is less likely to try again next time before reaching for someone else's number instead.

What this isn't

The out-of-hours enquiry percentage here is a self-estimate — a call log, missed-call list or website enquiry timestamps (if the site records them) will give a far more accurate figure than a guess. It also doesn't factor in whether out-of-hours enquiries are worth chasing at all — for some trades, an evening enquiry can comfortably wait until morning without losing the job, and coverage matters far less than it does for genuine emergency call-out work.
