Installation work has a distinct shape: survey, order, fit, commission, hand over. Each stage has a document that prevents a specific and expensive failure, and installers who skip the first one pay for it at the fourth.
The pre-installation survey is the most valuable document in this category by some distance. It records the measurements you took, the substrate you found, the existing services, the access constraints, the parking situation, and the things you told the customer would be an extra. When the wrong-sized unit arrives, or the wall behind the plaster turns out to be something other than what everyone assumed, the survey decides who pays. A signed survey attached to the order is a five-minute job that regularly saves four figures.
Commissioning records confirm the installation was tested and set up correctly: settings applied, readings taken, controls configured, safety devices proven. For most manufacturer warranties this is a condition rather than a courtesy — a claim on a heat pump, a boiler or a rooflight will be met with a request for the commissioning evidence, and its absence usually ends the conversation.
The hand-over pack is what the customer keeps. Product documentation, warranty registration details, how to operate what you have installed, maintenance requirements and intervals, and who to call. Registration is worth flagging explicitly, because unregistered products routinely lose extended warranty cover on a technicality months after the installer has moved on.
Where your installation is notifiable under Building Regulations — replacement windows and doors, certain insulation and heating work, electrical work under Part P — it must be certified through a competent person scheme or building control. These templates support that process; they do not replace scheme certification.
